The Merlot is a Gothic-style harp with light string tension and very long scale lengths. An easy touch produces a rich sound.
Even under the legendary "powerful hands" of Ray Poole, it performed wonderfully. Ray once took this harp to the limits of its dynamic range – and it did not overload. He was surprised and delighted with the Merlot's response. A friend once mentioned to me that a very young student was playing awkwardly and choppily on a high tension harp. Her teacher suggested she try a Merlot. The girl's touch quickly became sweet and flowing. "Playing the harp need not be an athletic event – and the Merlot proves my point."
